Ignorance is Bush's Greatest Weapon

Those who support President Bush tend to be people who really aren't that plugged in to current events. For a year-and-a-half Bush bashers were told to keep quiet when it came to dissenting to Bush, especially in his war on Iraq. After last May and the "Mission Accomplished" incident, things in Iraq slowly started to unravel--no WMDs, the guerilla war, Iraqi protests, looting, oil that never really started pumping to pay for the war, high gas prices. After a few months Bush bashers saw their views validated and started speaking up. They ran into Bush supporters who were still basking in the glow of a clock that stopped on May 1st, 2003--still claiming Iraq caused 9/11, saying dissent against Bush was treason, claiming WMDs were found, and insisting the war was won, end of story.

Slowly some people are coming around as the media finally grows a pair and starts saying what a mess Iraq has become. But there are many who still support Bush due to his patriotic platitudes, religious references, and bumper sticker solutions to complex problems. Ask that Bush supporter about issue X or issue Y however, and they won't be aware of it. Press them, they get angry and don't want to talk about it. Bush will say he loves and believes in America, but he really believes in pontificating meaningless prescripted statements his most loyal constituency--the uninformed.

You really need to read Brooks' series of books. You are sadly misinformed regarding your whole stereotype whereby "intellectuals" live in coastal urban areas and "dumb hicks" live in the interior.

[By the way, some of the dumbest, most irrational and illogical people, with the most screwed up lives, whom I've ever met, I've met right here in California, in places Like Berkeley, Albany, San Francisco and the like!]
